Part of a new segment the website will feature, “Today in Dukes History” will present a moment from the past acknowledging previous successes in Wellington’s rich athletic history. 15 years ago today the 2000 football team traveled to Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium to battle the Coldwater Cavaliers in the Regional Finals of the state football playoffs. Much of the town of Wellington made the long haul to Tiffin to cheer on their team. The Dukes were on a 12 game winning streak headed into the game and just came off of a win against Huron. The Dukes lost that night to Coldwater, a team that would go on to the State Championship.
Even though the Dukes season ended that night, that team will never be forgotten. One of the best football teams to come through Wellington, this Lorain County Conference championship team produced 3 LCC MVP awards and Coach of the Year honors. They scored an outstanding 537 points on the season and only gave up 49 points to opponents during the regular season. Definitely a team that created many memories for fans and a team the town was very proud of.
