This weekend’s events had its highs and lows for the Dukes. The boys basketball team did not have the start that they wanted Friday night. A quick and skilled Oberlin team got the best of them on opening night by a score of 63-54. Then Saturday night the team waited a little too long to turn it on against New London as a late second half surge of energy was not enough to overcome a 16 point deficit. The game was tied at one point with less then 2 minutes in the game but a couple late big plays went the Wildcats’ way resulting in a 64-60 loss. The boys hope to carry some of that second half energy into Tuesday home opener against Brooklyn.
The girls basketball team was able to preserve their undefeated record in Patriot Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon. After a JV win 34-17, the girls took care of Clearview on the road 48-43 despite missing a few players. This makes the girls 3-0 in the conference. Junior Logan Simmons led the Lady Dukes in scoring with 14 points and freshman Alexis Lehmkuhl had 12 points. Both girls made all 4 of their free throw attempts, points that would be a big factor in the margin of victory. Senior Jasmine White also added 10 points.
The wrestling team was very successful at the Avon Lake invitational tournament this weekend. 7 wrestlers from Wellington were able to place in the tournament. Nick Fox placed 6th and Colin Shaffstall placed 4th, while Max Mohrman, Tyler Wilfong, and Mason Wright were able to place 5th. Steve Ferguson and Chris Miller were able to make it to the championship match in their weight classes. Both of them came up just short but were proud to place 2nd.
Thanks to all the fans and parents for coming out and supporting the Dukes!
