Boys Junior Varsity Golf, Boys Varsity Golf · Golf Finishes Third In Conference

The golf team had a very successful season this year. They came extremely close to winning the conference and player of the year. Only a 1 stroke loss on the tie breaking 5th golfer in a dual match and a measly half of a point in the golfer standings kept the Dukes from hoisting a golf conference title since the late 90’s. The boys came into the conference tournament tied for second place with Lutheran West, and Keystone while trailing Buckeye. The boys would have to beat all three teams in the tournament. As the tournament came to an end many anxious golfers stood around and watched the scores be posted. Wellington had defeated Keystone and Buckeye handily. As Lutheran West began to post the scores the Dukes thought that a one stroke lead against the Longhorns top golfers was good enough to secure the title but a 6th golfer of Lutheran West came in with the third best score on the day bumping the Longhorns ahead. An earlier loss to Lutheran West in the regular season that ended in a tied score being broke by a 5th score’s one stroke lead ended up haunting the Dukes. The Dukes finished 3rd in the PAC tournament and 3rd overall in the conference. Only the 2010 Dukes golf team finished higher in the PAC tournament.

The Dukes also had the best score on the day. Senior Alex Fehlan shot an 81 to win the conference tournament. Alex is only the second Dukes golfer to win the tournament. His 7 stroke lead over the PAC player of the year was not enough to make up the 5 point deficit he entered the tournament with. Alex needed to beat the eventual player of the year by 5 places to win the MVP honors but the player of the year and another golfer tied making him only 4.5 places behind. Alex missed the MVP award by .5 points. None the less Alex and the rest of the Dukes will be looking forward to the sectional tournament next Wednesday at Pine Hills.

Despite the small shortcomings of the golfers. They had a very successful year as a golf team. They hope to reach districts as a team next week.
