The girls basketball team faced their toughest conference opponent of the year yesterday February 3rd. Lutheran West and the Lady Dukes were both undefeated in the conference and Lutheran West had only lost one game all season. The largest crowd of the season was in attendance to watch the competitive game. It was also senior day for our girls. The Lady Dukes upper classmen played hard in the early going, getting the crowd behind them entering the second quarter with a 21-12 lead. Lutheran West then fired right back with a big quarter of their own ending the half up by 5 at 28-33. The Lady Dukes looked to their usual starting five in the second half to gain back the lead. The two teams exchanged three pointers back in fourth as the Lady Dukes found triples from Alexis Lehmkuhl, Hope Diermyer, and Lexi Wright. Two free throws by Erin Frenk put the girls ahead of the Longhorns and from there on Jalen Gibbs took over. A bucket by Gibbs as the third quarter ended put the Lady Dukes up ahead again. Going into the fourth Lutheran West continued to pressure the ball and try to use their speed to get easy buckets. The fourth quarter went back and forth with Lutheran West taking the lead at 56-55. Jalen Gibbs had scored all 9 fourth quarter points at this point and found herself at the free throw line looking for the lead. Jalen buried them both and put the Lady Dukes up 57-56 with 1:02 left in the game. Lutheran West would have one more chance at the win after grabbing a rebound with under ten seconds left in the game. The sprint down the court led to a shot and the ball rolled off the top of the rim no good. The Lady Dukes had won the game in dramatic fashion. With a win the girls secured a share of the conference championship winning the title for the first time since 1989. One more win is needed for the girls to shutout the rest of the teams at a share of the title. They will play again Wednesday at Keystone.
Go Lady Dukes!
