The boys basketball season started yesterday, Saturday December 1st. The boys hosted New London for their first game of the season. Right out of the tip the game shot out to a blistering pace. The Dukes turned defensive stops into fast break layups and scored 21 points in the 1st quarter to set the tone for the entire game. The Dukes led the entire game but it was in the fourth quarter when New London started to nibble away at the deficit. Despite New London narrowing the lead to a one possession game the Dukes stayed poised with the lead. The team made the plays they needed to win the game. Parker Adler came away with a steal late in the fourth to thwart a possession of the Wildcats. Brandon Orozco hit a big three that extended the Dukes lead with just minutes left in the game. But it all came down to the final seconds when senior Ryan Whitaker found himself at the free throw line only up 2 points. Ryan buried both free throws to put the Dukes ahead by 2 possessions and secure the win. The final score was 60-56.
Mason McClellan led the squad with 19 points while also having the duty of defending New London’s best scoring threat. Whitaker finished with an efficient 14 points while Noah Diermyer and Brandon Orozco had double digit scoring figures. Ben Bliss added the last of the points of the boys.
The win adds to the Dukes’ school record home winning streak that now spans 3 seasons long for a total of 16 games. The boys will play again Tuesday at Rocky River.
